Columbia-New York Presbyterian Hospital Pediatric Dentistry - Observership
Description
The Pediatric Dentistry Observership Program at the Columbia-New York Presbyterian Hospital is based at the Pediatric Dentistry Residency Clinic which houses an accredited 24-month hospital-based certificate program with Columbia University affiliation.
Program design is to give the extern a glimpse into life as resident. Program curriculum provides broad-based clinical exposure at several practice settings including (1) New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH), (2) Children’s Hospital of New York (CHONY) and (3) Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine (CDM) which includes our Division of Pediatric Dentistry and our Section of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Leadership in Pediatric Dentistry Program.
Curriculum: Course study depends on the timeframe that an extern arrives but may include a wide range of clinically oriented multidisciplinary basic science core courses. The program enables the extern to familiarize themselves with the well child and the child with special needs. Extern exposure in resident research and resident fellow teaching are additional program components. (1) Clinical: advanced clinical practice in pediatric dentistry, preventive and interceptive orthodontics, N2O/O2 psychosedation, care for the child with special needs (medically compromised, mentally disabled, craniofacial disorders, physically disabled), pediatric anesthesiology and operating room protocol, conscious sedation, pediatric dentistry instruction preceptorship, pediatric oral trauma management, oral surgery, and infant oral health. (2) Rotation: residents rotate in pediatric medicine, the pediatric emergency department, and in pediatric anesthesiology all within CHONY. Other rotators are through school based and mobile van based clinics. The extern may shadow the rotator resident (3) Didactic: seminars, literature, board and book reviews, case conferences, oral medicine, oral pathology, orthodontics, cephalometrics, cariology, pediatric medicine, and research methodology in preventive dentistry and advanced pediatric dental research focused on health services and a series of courses that explore children's oral health in the context of family, community, and society; alternative career options; and partnerships with others who serve the interests of children's health and welfare.
Strengths: (1)
Didactic program featuring outstanding faculty from CDM, P&S, NYPH and Children’s
Hospital (2) Diverse patient pool with extensive clinical exposure to
pharmacologic/non-pharmacologic management (3) Faculty balance between those
with FT academic commitments and those in PT/FT clinical practice. Externs will
be encouraged to function at the level of a first-year resident and will be
expected to participate in all aspects of the residency program including
inpatient and outpatient care, presentations on rounds, writing of notes,
in-house call, and participation in all conferences.
Restrictions
Two externs can be accommodated during any given period.
