Is Age a Risk Factor for Periodontal Disease?
The first wave of the Baby Boomer generation reached the age of 65 just last year. Speculation about the effects of this population on our society has been rife for many years. Now that this major demographic shift has occurred, all sectors of society, especially health care, must be prepared to meet the needs of this unique group.
Dentistry is undergoing many changes that can be directly attributed to this demographic phenomenon. In particular, the management of periodontal disease has long been associated with older patients. This presentation will examine the myths and realities pertaining to age, periodontal disease, implants, and esthetics for this population. Finally, the ever-growing relationship between the pharmacologic and dental management of older patients will be discussed. |
