Differential Diagnosis of Oral Lesions with Olga A. C. Ibsen, RDH, MS
The oral cavity will be divided into the following areas: lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa, palate, and gingiva. First, examples of normal will be shown. Then, fifteen to twenty conditions for each area will include variations of normal, reactive lesions, infectious diseases, chromosomal abnormalities, immunologic conditions, and malignancies. Emphasis will be placed on the diagnostic methods that contribute the most to final diagnosis.
Course Objectives: Describe three conditions that are considered variations of the normal tongue; Name the diagnostic method that contributes significantly to the differential diagnosis; Describe the histologic features of Pemphigus, Pemphigoid and Lichen Planus; Define leukoplakia and erythroplakia; List two screening procedures that may assist in the diagnostic process; List and describe three conditions which are examples of molecular chromosomal abnormalities; Name three oral conditions that may easily be treated with therapeutic diagnosis; List and describe four conditions with immunologic pathogenesis; What is the role of the dental hygienist in preliminary diagnosis of lesions.
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Infection: Oral Manifestations & Significance with Joan A. Phelan, DDS, MS
The relationship between human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and cancer of the vaginal cervix in women is well established. Patients frequently ask questions about the significance of HPV as a cause of oral cancer and there are many internet sites as well as other media that discuss this subject.
This presentation will include an overview of HPV infection, the oral lesions known to be caused by HPV and the results of recent studies that have explored the role of HPV in the pathogenesis of oral cancer.
Course Objectives: Participants will understand the pathogenesis of epithelial infection with HPV; be able to list the oral mucosal lesions that are known to be caused by HPV infection; and become familiar with the results of research studies that are exploring the role of HPV in the pathogenesis of oral cancer. |
