The College of Dental Medicine at Columbia
University currently offers five dual degree programs combining
the DDS degree with professional studies in public health or business,
or consolidating undergraduate studies with the DDS program. Click
below or to the left for more information on any of these courses
of study.
DDS/MPH Program (With
the Mailman School of Public Health)
program online application, SDOS http://www.adea.org/AADSAS/AADSAS_Main_Page.htm
Qualified students who wish to pursue a public health
degree along with their dental certification may apply to the DDS/MPH
dual degree program. Individuals pursing this course of study receive
thorough foundations in the basic biological sciences and clinical
dentistry, and gain invaluable insights into the complexities of
the evolving U.S. health care system. DDS/MPH degree candidates
may choose among a number of public health concentrations, including
epidemiology, biostatistics, health administration, and the sociomedical
sciences.
To be admitted, students must successfully submit
an application to the College of Dental Medicine, then must
apply and gain acceptance to the Mailman School of Public Health
(which sets admission standards for the MPH component of the combined
program). Although an early commitment is advisable, students can
enter the program at any time during the first 2 _ years of dental
schoolÑand have up to two years after graduation from SDOS to complete
the requirements for the MPH degree (a minimum of 35 academic credits
in public health).
Students enrolled in the DDS/MPH degree track are
uniquely equipped to assume leadership roles at the interface of
dentistry, medicine, and the health care system. They also have
a number of career options open to them; graduates of the program
serve in administrative posts, the public health service, general
practice residencies, specialty residencies, the armed services,
and private practice.

DDS/MBA Program (With the Graduate
School of Business) (BACK TO TOP)
program online application, SDOS http://www.adea.org/AADSAS/AADSAS_Main_Page.htm
Qualified students who wish to pursue a business degree
along with their dental certification may apply to the five-year
DDS/MBA dual degree program. Individuals pursing this course of
study receive thorough foundations in the basic biological sciences
and clinical dentistry, and gain invaluable insights into the financial
considerations and managerial aspects of health care organizations
preparing them to assume leadership roles at the forefront of the
health care industry.
To be admitted, students must apply and gain acceptance
to both the College of Dental Medicine and the Graduate School
of Business, which sets admission standards for the MBA component
of the program (application forms for the SDOS component of the
program is downloadable from this site). Admission to the business
school may take place between the beginning of the first year and
the completion of the third year at SDOS. DDS/MBA candidates must
interrupt their dental school studies for three terms to complete
the required business curriculum, which includes fifteen business
courses and 45 overall credit points.
There is a tremendous need for this type of dual expertise
in the dental profession: Delivery of dental care services is becoming
an increasingly complex proposition. In this type of climate, the
field of dentistry will be best served by individuals who are not
only professionally trained managers, but who also understand the
basic conditions for ethical and responsible dental health care.
Graduates of the DDS/MBA program can therefore expect to remain
in professional demand for the foreseeable future.
