To qualify for admission under this program,
candidates must either have an M.D. degree (U.S. or non-U.S.) or
at least two years of education in a U.S. medical school.
Application Requirements
To apply for admission with
advanced standing, candidates must submit a complete application
package in one mailing, no later than January 1 before the academic
year of entry. The package must include the following:

A completed application
form.

A personal statement
of no more than 200 words, indicating reasons for transfer.

A non-refundable check
or money order in the amount of $100, made payable to Columbia
University.

Official transcripts
for all undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate work. If
transcripts are from schools outside the United States, applicants
must include an official course-by-course evaluation from
the World Education Service (WES). For more information on
WES, please contact them directly at the following:

Letters of recommendation
from one faculty member and the academic dean of the medical
school attended, as well as one post-doctoral reference, if
applicable.

Official results from
the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
A minimum score of 600 is required (250 on the computerized
version) or 100 on ibt. Applicants who attended an English-speaking university
may be exempt and should contact the Academic Dean. Call (609)

Official results of the United
States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), Step 1, if taken.
Although not required, applicants with USMLE results will
be given preference.

Admissions Procedures
During the first academic year, special students
are enrolled in the following six courses:

Introduction to dentistry

Dental anatomy and occlusion

Basic Prosthodontics

Oral histology, growth
and development
In July of that academic year, the student
is expected to take the Dental National Board Part I examination,
which is a requirement for admission into the Advanced
Standing Program.
During the first semester of the second year,
special students are enrolled in the following seven courses:

to operative dentistry

Part I, Preclinical operative
technique

Introduction to oral
and maxillofacial surgery

Part I, Principles of
periodontics
If the special student has passed the Dental
National Board Part I examination, has successfully completed
all requirements of the first year of program, and is in good
standing for all second-year courses, (s)he may apply for admission
to the DDS program with advanced standing.
If admitted, the student will now be a full-time
DDS degree student, starting with the second semester of the
second year of the program (January start date). For more detailed
