Birnberg Research Award
Established by the Columbia University School of Dental & Oral Surgery's Alumni Association in the early 1950's, the purpose of this award is to encourage dental research of excellence and to help arouse public interest for the support of dental research. Annually, the School of Dental & Oral Surgery in conjunction with its Alumni Association focuses attention on dental research through the Presentation of the Birnberg Award. This Award was named in honor of Dr. Frederick Birnberg (1893 1969) who helped to establish the research fund and who was known as "Mr. Alumnus." Dr. Birnberg (Class 1915) felt that the "real answer to die nation's and the world's dental problems will be found only through continued research.”
Qualifications for the Award
The recipient of the award is selected by a group of faculty members of the school in conjunction with the school's Alumni Association. Individuals who have made outstanding contributions in dentistry through mentoring of dental scientists and through the presentation of their own research investigations are considered for the award. The prize consists of the Birnberg Research Plaque and an honorarium. There have been forty five recipients honored since it was first presented in 1954.
