The Columbia Postdoctoral Periodontics program is one of the oldest such programs in the world. Its first class entered in September 1947 for a one-year course, which increased to two years in 1953, and to three years in 1994. Graduates of the program automatically become members of the Alumni Association. By 2007, the Columbia Periodontal Alumni Association, which was formally organized in 1971, had more than 280 members.
Contributions to the Alumni Association help to support the postdoctoral program by:
- sponsoring or co-sponsoring continuing education courses;
- arranging for the annual dinner or reception during the AAP Annual Meeting, to which current students are invited.
Among its other functions, the Alumni Association serves as a vehicle for alumni, faculty and students to network together. This relationship has enabled students to find employment opportunities and has helped established practitioners to find associates and buyers.
This web page is intended to keep alumni up to date on what's happening at CDM and in the Periodontics program.

Upcoming events:
On Friday, May 2, 2008, the Alumni will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its first graduating class (1948) at a luncheon in the Faculty Club. Earlier in the day, it will co-sponsor the annual Tenenbaum lecture by Dr. Jan Lindhe who was also one of the speakers at the 35th anniversary celebration 25 years ago.
Email addresses needed:
We would like to send future Alumni notices by email instead of snail mail. It will be quicker and we will save on the ever-rising cost of postage. If you have not already done so, please email your email address to Murray Schwartz at ms35@columbia.edu.
Associates/Situations wanted:
This page can be a vehicle for matching the periodontal practices of alumni with graduating students seeking employment or associateships. Our residents come from many parts of the U.S. and other countries and most would welcome a position as associate in an established practice. If you are considering the possibility of an associate in your practice, let us know, preferably by email to Murray Schwartz or Jim Fine (email: jbf1@columbia.edu) and we will inform our residents. Those who are interested will send you a resume and will be available for an interview.
