AEGD Competencies

First-Year

1. Plan and provide multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care including effective communication with other health care professionals in a variety of settings and to request and respond to requests for patient consultations from physicians and other health care providers

2. Diagnose, manage, and treat oral and maxillofacial diseases and abnormalities in patients including those with complex medical conditions, the frail elderly, and the developmentally disabled

3. Treat dental and medical emergencies

4. Promote oral and systemic health and disease prevention

5. Manage oral-facial pain and anxiety in the conscious patient through the use of psychological interventions, behavior modification techniques, local anesthesia, and sedation techniques

6. Assess medical risk and obtain informed consent

7. Restore teeth at a level of skill and complexity beyond that accomplished in predoctoral training

8. Replace teeth using fixed and removable appliances at a level of skill and complexity beyond that accomplished in predoctoral training

9. Provide periodontal therapy at a level of skill and complexity beyond that accomplished in predoctoral training

10. Provide pulpal therapy at a level of skill and complexity beyond that accomplished in predoctoral training

11. Perform hard and soft tissue surgery at a level of skill and complexity beyond that accomplished in predoctoral training

12. Critically assess published dental literature to acquire and organize information in an effective and systematic manner for assessing self-performance and knowledge, treatment therapies and outcomes, and scientific findings and technologies

13. Comprehend practice management methods to include continuous quality improvement and understand the financing and organization of oral health care delivery systems

14. Apply ethical principles in patient care, research protocols, and business practice

15. Deliver oral health care to patients of diverse cultures and social status
 

Second-Year

1. Integrate all aspects of oral health care in the dental treatment of patients with complex dental, medical, and social issues

2. Perform and maintain uncomplicated endosseous implant restorations

3. Participate in community programs to prevent and reduce the incidence of oral disease

4. Participate in the design and management of a system of continuous quality improvement in a dental practice

5. Participate in the administration of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program

6. Teach undergraduate dental students in selected clinical and didactic disciplines
