Alpha
Omega International Dental Fraternity (AO)
SDOS Contacts:
Maayan Ben-Shalom: mb2585@columbia.edu
Jiawoei Wang: jw2315@columbia.edu
Alpha Omega is one of the two professional dental fraternities available for students (second year and above) at CDM. Our Eta Chapter maintains no religious affiliation and strongly encourages multicultural participation, even though historically the fraternity members were predominantly Jewish. Here at CDM, we adamantly promote fraternalism, scholarship, and volunteerism.
Alpha Omega sponsors two leadership conferences each year, in the fall and in the spring, which allow fraters from across the country and Canada to get to know each other; there is also international convention for both students as well as practicing dentists which usually occurs around the end of December that brings members together from all corners of the world.

SDOS Contact:
Laura Greenwald: ldg202@columbia.edu
For over 77
years, AAWD has supported women in dentistry .
Initially social, it adapted to
changing times and member concerns. After
World War II, when women dentists forfeited
positions held in men's absence, AAWD guided
members toward newer goals.
The tradition of mentoring was born. As membership
increased, AAWD became a
national network for employment opportunities
and scientific exchange.

The
William Jarvie Society
SDOS contact:
Amy Bryer: alb149@columbia.edu
The William
Jarvie Society is the Columbia chapter of
the American Association of Dental Research-Student
Research Group. Approximately
25% of the students in the DDS program are
members. Originally organized in 1920,
it was formed to promote interest in research
by dentists and dental students. The
Jarvie executive committee and faculty advisors
work to acquaint interested students with
research opportunities at the medical center
and beyond. The goal is to entice every
Columbia dental student to be interested and
hopefully, involved in biomedical research.
However, it is not a requirement of Jarvie
that a member be actively involved in research.
Some activities
sponsored or organized by the Jarvie Society
include Birnberg Day (dental student research day), publication
of the Jarvie Journal and a quarterly newsletter, student meetings
of various topics, presentation by faculty
or invited speakers, and collaborative efforts
with other groups at the University.
Along with
membership of Jarvie, the student is automatically
a member of the American Association of
Dental Research (AADR) ,
the major component of the International
Association of Dental Research (IADR).
AADR membership allows the student to network
internationally with dental researchers and
dental faculty around the world and provides
an opportunity to obtain a subscription to
the Journal of Dental Research at a reduced
fee.

Website: http://ccf.hs.columbia.edu/
CCF is a non-denominational,
student-run organization whose aim is to encourage participants to
grow in their personal relationship with Jesus
Christ in fellowship with one another. Everyone
and anyone on the Health Science campus is
welcome to the weekly meetings, which include
prayer, Bible discussion, singing and fellowship.
Through the group meetings and the friendships
that grow out of them, members
support each other as they go through their
respective programs. Members of the fellowship
include students in the Medical, Dental, Graduate,
Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Physical
Therapy schools, as well as friends, spouses,
and students from the main campus. Dental
school is an exciting and challenging time.
Along with gaining
a tremendous
amount of knowledge, students find that their
values and convictions are tested. CCF seeks
to support its members through this process
by encouraging one another in Christ.
