Certificate or MS Degree Program in Periodontics

About the Program

Apply to the Periodontics Program

The Postdoctoral Periodontics Program is a full-time, clinically focused program designed to prepare licensed dentists to practice the specialty of Periodontics in private practice or in an academic setting. The program includes courses in the theory and practice of Periodontics and Implantology, along with the basic biological and related medical sciences. Students also have the opportunity to assist in clinical instruction in the predoctoral dental program.

Two parallel tracks are available:

  • A primarily clinical track that leads to a Certificate in Periodontics
  • A track that includes a substantial research component and leads to a Master of Science degree in Periodontics

Both tracks meet the requirements of the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Association.

Established in 1947, the Postdoctoral Periodontics Program at Columbia is one of the oldest such university-based dental programs in the world. Many of the program’s clinical faculty members, who represent a variety of approaches to clinical problems, are Diplomats of the American Board of Periodontology. The program’s alumni association now includes more than 280 members, including nine presidents of the American Academy of Periodontology, eight directors of the American Board of Periodontology, two deans, and several department heads, as well as authors of numerous research projects, peer-reviewed articles, and textbooks.
