A 60-minute session for Columbia instructors.
Monday, January 26th, 1-2pm, Online
Join this hands-on workshop to gain the foundational knowledge and critical skills needed to confidently navigate generative AI.
We will begin by defining generative AI and practicing different approaches to prompt engineering using “text-to-text” chatbots (like Google Gemini). Next, we’ll explore specialized tools like customizable AI chatbots and NotebookLM and discuss how some faculty are using them to support teaching and learning. Throughout, we will emphasize both the capabilities and limitations of these tools using a framework for critical AI literacy that emphasizes the need to validate anything generative AI technologies produce for accuracy and bias. By the end of this workshop, you’ll leave with practical, adaptable strategies for critically and effectively engaging with AI.
Session objectives:
- Master foundational concepts of generative AI, demonstrate its capabilities and recognize its key limitations (inaccuracies/hallucinations, bias propagation, sycophancy).
- Develop prompt engineering techniques to improve the quality of generative AI output.
- Describe how some faculty are currently using generative AI tools to support teaching and learning.
